GNPC Explorco, the exploration subsidiary of the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC), is preparing for a major milestone in Ghana’s energy sector with upcoming operations in the Voltaian Basin.
The company recently concluded a three-day stakeholder engagement mission in the Northern Region aimed at strengthening strategic partnerships and aligning its plans with regional development priorities ahead of its 2026 operational roadmap.
The delegation, led by Principal Corporate Affairs Officer Kwasi Appiah, met with key regional leaders, including the Northern Regional Minister, Regional Coordinating Director, and the Mayor of Tamale. The engagements focused on ensuring collaboration, local participation, and shared understanding of Explorco’s activities.
Mr Appiah reaffirmed the company’s commitment to a “Ghanaians-first” strategy, emphasizing local content, job creation, and capacity building for communities in the region.
The Voltaian Basin Project, Ghana’s flagship onshore petroleum frontier, remains on track, with Explorco expressing confidence in meeting its target to spud the first exploration well by the third quarter of 2026. The project is expected to play a significant role in driving economic development in northern Ghana.
As part of its social responsibility efforts during the festive season, GNPC Explorco extended support to the Tamale Children’s Home through the donation of food items, educational supplies, and other essential materials. The gesture formed part of the company’s broader commitment to community engagement and social impact.
The management of the Tamale Children’s Home expressed appreciation for the support and highlighted ongoing needs, particularly improved security infrastructure and expanded educational facilities, to better protect and support the children in their care.
The three-day mission marks a renewed phase in GNPC Explorco’s engagement with the Northern Region, with a pledge to maintain open communication and collaboration as preparations intensify toward the 2026 drilling campaign.
GNPC Explorco is the upstream exploration and production subsidiary of GNPC, mandated to build national capacity for independent operatorship and to lead exploration activities in Ghana’s inland sedimentary basins, particularly the Voltaian Basin.
Hon. Benjamin Narteh Ayiku is a Ghanaian politician and a prominent member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He currently serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Ledzokuku Constituency (Teshie) in the Greater Accra Region. In August 2025, he was appointed to the Board of GNPC Explorco.

Ayiku has prioritized local safety through his "Light Up Teshie" efforts, donating and installing over 2,000 streetlights across the constituency to curb nighttime criminal activities. He has also focused on road rehabilitation projects to improve accessibility for residents.

Experience
Throughout his career, Mr. Amoah has held key leadership roles, including Deputy Chief Executive at GNPC and Advisor to the Minister of Energy/Director of Petroleum at the Ministry of Energy. He has also served as Chairman and Member of various national, international, and industry boards and committees. Mr. Amoah has played a pivotal role in international arbitration cases involving Ghana. His contributions include serving as Technical Advisor for Ghana in the Maritime Boundary Case, which the country won on September 23, 2017.

Experience
A senior energy and commercial executive with 25+ years of experience across oil and gas, power, mining, and industry in Ghana. He served as Director of Petroleum at the Ministry of Energy & Green Transition in 2025 and previously spent over 12 years at the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation in strategic and gas business leadership roles. His earlier career includes commercial and operational positions with INSYSS Ghana Ltd, Lancaster Plant Ltd, Metso Minerals, and ExxonMobil Corporation.
